Writing Your Statement of Purpose, Thesis and Dissertation

Most overseas applications ask for a statement of purpose (SOP). Masters and doctoral study may also require a thesis or dissertation. The guidance below is based on published writing advice from universities and academic writing services. Students must write and submit their own work.

How to write a Statement of Purpose

  • Length: most programmes ask for roughly 500 to 1,000 words. Follow the programmeโ€™s instructions exactly.
  • Structure: an opening that states your academic goal; your background and the experiences that shaped it; why this specific programme and university; and your career plans and how the degree helps you reach them.
  • Be specific: name the programme, the faculty, modules or resources that fit your goals, and show evidence of your readiness such as projects, work or research.
  • Show, donโ€™t tell: use one or two real examples rather than general claims.
  • Avoid: generic statements, repeating your CV, and copying a template from another applicant.
  • Revise: write several drafts, leave time between edits, and ask a teacher or mentor for feedback.

Thesis and dissertation: what is the difference?

  • Masterโ€™s level: usually a thesis or dissertation of roughly 15,000 to 30,000 words, showing research competence.
  • Doctoral level: a longer thesis or dissertation, often 60,000 words or more, that makes an original contribution to the field.
  • Terminology differs by country: in the USA a thesis is often the masterโ€™s project and a dissertation the PhD; in the UK a dissertation is usually the masterโ€™s project and a thesis the PhD. Check your institutionโ€™s definition.
  • Typical structure: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion, with references and appendices.

Planning your writing

  • Start early. Confirm the deadline, word limit, formatting and citation style with your supervisor or admissions office.
  • Build an outline of chapters and sub-chapters before you write.
  • Keep a dated record of sources and back up your files regularly.
  • Plan supervisor meetings, and reserve time for revision and proofreading.

Academic integrity

  • ARFET gives guidance, explanations and feedback. It does not write SOPs, theses or dissertations on a studentโ€™s behalf.
  • Cite every source you use and paraphrase in your own words.
  • Use similarity-checking tools only where your institution allows.

How to Write a Research Proposal

Many masterโ€™s by research, PhD and funded scholarship applications ask for a research proposal. It shows the project you plan to carry out, why it matters, and how you will do it. Word limits vary by university, so always check the programmeโ€™s instructions.

Typical sections

  • Title: a clear description of the research topic.
  • Introduction and background: the context of the problem and why it matters.
  • Research questions, aims and objectives: what you want to find out, stated specifically.
  • Literature review: the key existing work, and the gap your research will fill.
  • Methodology: your research design, methods, data sources and how you will analyse them.
  • Timeline and work plan: realistic stages and milestones.
  • Expected contribution: the value your research adds to the field.
  • Ethics, resources and references: approvals needed, access to resources and cited sources.

Length and level

  • Masterโ€™s by research (MRes, MPhil): often around 1,000 to 2,000 words. The proposal should show potential and a sound approach, not exhaustive expertise.
  • PhD: often around 2,000 to 3,500 words, sometimes longer. It should show a project that can sustain three to four years of full-time study and make an original contribution.
  • Funded scholarships: often shorter, around 1,000 to 1,500 words, with a stronger focus on impact.
  • Check first: confirm the word limit, required sections and whether a template is provided.

Tips for a strong proposal

  • State the research gap clearly, and explain how your study fills it.
  • Make your research questions focused. Broad topics are hard to assess and to finish.
  • Describe your methods in enough detail that a supervisor can judge whether they are feasible.
  • Choose a supervisor whose interests match your topic, and mention them where the programme asks.
  • Keep the timeline realistic and divided into stages.
  • Cite key sources properly and proofread carefully.

Common mistakes

  • A topic that is too broad, with no clear question.
  • Little or no reference to existing literature.
  • Methods that do not match the research questions.
  • An unrealistic timeline for the level of study.
  • A proposal that is written only as a general interest statement rather than a plan of research.
